indriyebhyaḥ param manaḥ = the mind is superior to the senses; manasas sattvam uttamam = the “essence of the mind” is better than the mind; sattvāt adhi mahān ātma = higher than the intellect is the Mahat or “great self”; mahataḥ avyaktam uttamam = the unmanifest is superior to the “great self”.
Beyond the senses is the mind, beyond the mind is the intellect, beyond the intellect is the Great Atman. Superior to the Great Atman is the unmanifest.
